I have over the years made much in ToK lessons of the famous story of the South American tribe, the Piraha, who some claim have no vocabulary to talk about numbers. However I have unearthed a rich vein of related stories on a blog for students of linguistics, Language Log. In particular I lighted on a post and subsequent discussion on whether in Tagalog, a language spoken in the Philippines, there is a word for sorry, a word that apparently the President of the country has refused to use in response to the handling of a hostage-taking incident in 2010. And for anyone looking for unusual examples to illustrate essays, there is even a “No word for X archive” on the site. Manna from heaven for anyone wanting to address language as a way of knowing!
